Ridges

The Ridges We Do

Over the years we have come to the conclusion that Block Ridges are the best performing types of ridges in Ireland. The block ridges have performed well, with little maintenance, and many have lasted for 14+ years. 8-12 years is the expected life of a Block Ridge in Irish Conditions. All of our Block Ridges are made with water reed.

Scalloped Block Ridge

This style of ridge is very decorative. Time consuming, but the results speak for themselves.

Ridge Style V - U - V

This is a variation of the Scalloped Block Ridge. Solid and hard wearing. It just requires time and patience.

Standard Block Ridge

This ridge is the standard bearer. It looks great and lasts the distance. It is our most used style.

Upkeep and Replacement

A ridge should need little to no maintenance during its service life. If small repairs are needed, don’t delay contacting us.

Thatched Roof

Ridging

Water reed is hard-wearing and readily available in Ireland. A thatched roof ridge constructed using water reed makes a perfectly useful, solid and beautiful. Our reed ridges are perfect for the weather conditions in Ireland and have generally exceeded their expected useful lifespan of 8-12 years.

We cover all of our water reed ridges with wire netting. The wire netting is twisted together at the apex, and pinned to the ridge, and coatwork, with wire pins. Netting helps extend the life of your ridge. Storms and birds are the main culprits.

The ridge is primarily there to protect the top courses of your thatched roof. It is ‘The Sacrificial Lamb’ on your thatch. A practical, functional tool. At some point in History someone must have asked the question, “Why not make it beautiful, as well as functional”? So here we are.

Your Thatched Roof Ridge may get storm damaged, bird damage, or just wear away from age. Keep on top of any minor jobs until, eventually, it will become more cost effective to replace your ridge with a beautiful new ridge, plus another 8-12 years of peace of mind.
