A Short Guide/overview to help explain what happens when we are thatching, repairing, re-thatching and more.

Re-Ridge/Repair (2025).
A beautiful Thatched Cottage in Camross, County Laois.
Soon to be a cafe. Call in for a coffee after exploring the Slieve Bloom Mountains.
With a new ridge added, ridge wired, eaves dressed, chimney flashed, the barges tidied up, the roof cleaned down and repaired, and bluestoned, this old cottage is ready for its new life as a cafe.
Check out the Camross Community website.
Re-Ridge (2025).
A beautiful Irish Thatched Cottage in County Roscommon.
The old ridge has done its job.
After 12+ years it finally succumbed during a storm. The scallops were worn away so did not hold the liggers in place.
The top courses were bone dry, with no water ingress at all, so the ridge was doing what it is designed to do; protect the top courses.
With a new ridge added, eaves dressed, chimney painted and the roof cleaned down, this old cottage is sorted for another decade.
We first worked on this roof in 2013. See here for more.
Re-Ridge and Repair (2025).
A beautiful roof in County Tipperary.
A new ridge was added, holes repaired, eaves and barges dressed, chimney flashed and painted, and the roof cleaned down.
Looks like a brand new roof. The roof has lasted over two decades already. The steep pitch and open location will be contributing to its longevity.
Strip and Rethatch.
Two beautiful thatched roofs in County Waterford.
Roofs stripped to a firm base then re-thatched with water reed. The water reed is scalloped on using hazel scallops.
These iconic thatched roofs get plenty of photos taken of them as they are on the Copper Coast.

Re-Ridge and Repair.
The 1798 cottage at Lullymore Heritage and Discovery Park.
A new ridge added, holes repaired and the roof cleaned down. Holes fixed and the roof cleaned down.
By removing all of the soggy surface the roof will dry faster after rain as it will run off instead of being soaked up by the moss etc.
Re-Thatch.
We repaired and tidied the old layer and decided to thatch over it.
This roof now has a 20+ inch thickness of water reed. Super insulating, and great soundproofing.
The new 14 inch thick coat of reed was screwfixed and scalloped onto the existing thatch.
Re-Thatch.

The old straw thatch and sheep wire were removed.
Battens were then attached to the existing corrugated iron roof and thatched onto using screwfixings.14 inches of reed.

Over 100 years apart.
Two New Zealanders leaving their mark on a Thatched Cottage in Bunmahon, County Waterford.
One painted a picture of it. The other thatched it.
A few differences since the painting.
The forge has long since disappeared (to the left of the cottage) and the window and door have been blocked up.
The stream is currently overgrown and willow has taken over.
The house endures. Loved and cared for by good people.

Re-Thatch.
Another beautiful cottage at Lullymore Heritage and Discovery Park.
Fixed new coat of water reed to existing thatch using scallops.
Lovely.
The eave is huge now. It is more like a porch than an eave. That keeps the rain away, for sure.
